Charles Sewell Appleton [also known as C. S. Appleton] was born in Torquay, Devon, England in 1862 and was articled to his father Edward Appleton (1832-1916). He also attended the Architectural Association Schools and Royal Academy Schools in London, and King's College, London. He commenced independent practice as an architect in Torquay, Devon in 1882. As well as domestic work, he was Architect to Cary and Preston Estates, and Ecclesiastical Surveyor for Diocese of Exeter. He practised as an architect in Torquay until at least 1928. He was a Fellow of the Devon and Exeter Architectural Society. He died in Torquay, Devon on 19 April 1932.
