The AHRnet Biographical Dictionary of British and Irish Architects 1800-1950 contains biographical, bibliographical and Internet data on architects born or working in Ireland, Wales and Scotland during years 1800-1950.
There is inevitably a degree of overlap with two fine online biographical dictionaries of architects - Dictionary of Scottish Architects 1660 - 1980 and Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940. Where this occurs it is acknowledged. It is our intention to compliment and supplement the information in these two databases, particularly with the inclusion of over 100,000 Internet links, and a wealth of bibliographical references.
Two invaluable sources of reference in compiling The AHRnet Biographical Dictionary of British and Irish Architects 1800-1950 have been:
1) Directory of British Architects 1834-1914. Compiled by Antonia Brodie, et al. 2 vols London; New York: British Architectural Library, Royal Institute of British Architects/Continuum, 2001. For further information about the Directory see Sources
2) Kamen, Ruth H. British and Irish Architectural History: a bibliography and guide to sources of information. London: The Architectural Press; New York: Nichols Publishing Co., 1981
The AHRnet Biographical Dictionary of British and Irish Architects 1800-1950 is an ongoing project. It currently contains approximately 3,000 entries. We will be constantly updating the entries and will be adding at least an additional 2,000 entries over the coming months
