Richard Burnie Armistead [also known as Colonel Richard Burnie Armistead] was born in Bingley, Yorkshire, England on 10 May 1890 and was the son of Richard Armistead (1822-1902) an architect and land surveyor practising in Yorkshire. In the 1911 England and Wales census his occupation was given as architecture student. It is not known where or with whom he studied. By 1920 he was practising as an architect in Bradford, Yorkshire.

Armistead was a member of the West Yorkshire Society of Architects and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1933
His address was given as 15 Victor Road, Bradford, Yorkshire in 1911; and 10 Booth Street, Bradford in 1920 and 1950. He died in Harrogate, Yorkshire on 7 December 1965. His address at the time of his death was Selby House, Granby Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire
