John Geoffrey Birkett was born in 1902. In c.1930 he joined the Southampton architect Herbert Collins (1885-1975) in partnership as Herbert Collins & Birkett. Birkett worked primarily as a planner whilst Collins focused more on the design side of the firm. The partnership was dissolved in c.1939. Birkett subsequently worked in the regional planning office in Reading, Berkshire
