Arthur William Blomfield [also known as Sir Arthur William Blomfield] was born in London, England on 6 March 1829. After studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, from where he graduated in 1851, he trained as an architect with Philip Charles Hardwick (1822-1892) from 1852 to 1855. He commenced practice as an architect in London in 1856 and in 1890 formed a partnership - Arthur Blomfield & Sons, with his sons, Charles James Blomfied (1862-1932) and Arthur Conran Blomfield (1863-1935). He was appointed architect to the Bank of England in 1883 and was Diocesan Architect to Winchester.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1867. He was also elected a Fellow of the Society of Architects (FSA) in 1881, and an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1883. He was the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal in 1891. In 1861 he was President of the Architectural Association and was knighted in 1889. He died at the Royal Societies Club in London on 30 October 1899.
