Brewerton, Joseph Henry 1859 - 1927

Joseph Henry Brewerton was born in Castleford, Yorkshire, England, in 1859. He was articled to J.A. Garthwaite in Pontefract, Yorkshire, from 1874 to 1878, and was then surveyor to Castleford Local Board of Health until 1881.  He set up his own independent office in 1881 and practised as an architect in Castleford until 1886 when he moved to Bournemouth in Hampshire. He then worked as chief assistant to Harry E.W. Hawker and Victor Mitchell of Messrs H.E. Hawker & Mitchell until 1900. Between 1894 and 1900 he also practised privately.  In 1900 he formed a partnership with John James Shepherd as Brewerton & Shepherd in Bournemouth, Hampshire [now Dorset]. The partnership was dissolved in 1905. By 1926 he was co-partner in the firm Brewerton & Marshall. 

Brewerton designed a number of houses in Bournemouth, Hampshire, and in the neighbouring county of Dorset. A photograph and a ground-floor plan of 'The Dial House' in Christchurch, Dorset, designed by Brewerton is featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1908 (illustration B39); four photographs and the ground floor plan of Bransgore House in Christchurch, Dorset, designed by him are illustrated in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1910 (pp.19, 20, 21); a photograph of a corridor of a house at Boscombe, near Bournemouth, is illustrated in 'The studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1912 (p.10); photographs of an entrance lodge at Canford Cliffs, Dorset, and  a house at Hubborn, near Christchurch, Dorset designed by him are illustrated in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1914 (pp.11, 12); and photographs of a house at Boscombe Cliff, Dorset, and West Southbourne, Bournemouth, designed by him are illustrated in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1915 (pp.55, 56).  Brewerton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1901.

Brewerton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1901. address was given as Richmond Chambers, The Square, Bournmouth (1901, 1914); Glen Road, Boscombe, Dorset (1901); and Richmond Chambers, The Square, Bournemouth (1926).  He died in 1927.
