Herbert Harold Brown was born in Altringham, Cheshire in 1876 and was articled to John Macnamara in Altringham, Cheshire, England in 1889. He also attended Manchester School of Art. He then then worked as an assistant to E. J. Thompson & Son in Manchester from c.1902 to 1905 when he commenced practice in 1905.
Brown designed a number of schools in the greater Manchester area. He also designed at least two picture houses (cinemas), and the war memorial a St Anne’s Church Church in Sale, Cheshire. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1910 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1913. He was active as an architect until at least the 1930s. He died in 1948. His death was registered in St. Albans Hertfordshire
A considerable amount of Council School work, the latest being the Cheshire County "Model Rural School", at Haslington, near Crewe, claimed to be In every way the most up-to-date school in that county; domestic work of various kinds, houses, shops, &c, in suburbs of Manchester; extensive alterations In reconstructing buildings In some of the principal Manchester streets; also the entire rebuilding of some, such as Nos. 18 and 20, Brazennose Street, Manchester; 23 and 26, High Street, Manchester. Has undertaken the remodelling of many licensed houses In Manchester areas; new works for Robert Carlyle, builder; now carrying out large new works at Salford, for Gresham & Craven, Ltd., Engineers, and others.
