George F. Catchpole [also known as G. F. Catchpole] was born in Heckfield, Hampshire, England in 1861 and studied art at the Soiuth Kensington Schools in London in the 1870s. He won awards in the National Competition in 1878 for his designs for glass vases, and in the National Competition in 1880 for his designs for a soup tureen, candelabrum, and dinner plate.
He was subsequently active as a decorative designer and later architect in London from the early 1880s. In the 1890s he designed wallpaper patterns for Wm. Woollams & Co. By the early 1900s he had moved to Edinburgh.
Catchpole gave as his occupation as "Designer" in the 1881 England, Wales and Scotland Census; and "Architect and Designer" in the 1901 Census.
His address was given as Block, 2, Ebury Buildings, St George Hanover Square, London in 1881; and Bruntsfield Avenue, 20, Edinburgh, Newington, Midlothian, Scotland in 1901
