Chant, Arthur Guy 1887 - 1959

Arthur Guy Chant was born in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England in 1887.  By the mid-1920s he was employed in the Architect's Department, Education Office, Birmingham and from 1930 to 1951 was architect to Shropshire County Council.

Chant was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1921; and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1939. In 1942 he was a founder member of the County Architects' Society and its President in 1950-51,

Chant was also a poet. and musician He wrote at least two plays, and a collection of stories for children entitled The Magic Umbrella (1948).  

His address was given as 3, St. George's Crescent, Stanwix, Carlisle in 1923; and 5 Belmont, Shrewsbury in 1935. and 1939. He died in Lancaster, Lancashire on 2 April 1959.

During his tenure as the Shropshire County Council architect he remodelled Shire Hall in Shrewsbury; and designed Shropshire Technical College in Shrewsbury; the Priory Grammar School in Shrewsbury; Whitchurch Grammar School; and Wellington School.
