Frederick Lawrence Charlton [also known as Frederick Laurence Charlton] was born Frederick Lawrence Kruckenberg in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in January 1889. [He changed his surname by deed poll to Charlton in 1921, possibly because of anti-German sentiment in the post-World War One years]. He was articled to Herbert Dawes (?-1908) from 1906 to 1908, and, after his death, with Percy Robinson (1868-1950) and William Alban Jones (1875-1960) of Robinson & Jones in 1908-09. He then remained with them until 1912. He also attended Leeds School of Art. He worked as an assistant to Basil Champneys (1842-1935) in 1913, and to Henry Stratford de Bertodano from 1913. He qualified as an architect in 1914 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) later that year.
During World War One he served in the British Army. Following the war he resumed his architectural practice [under the surname Charlton] and had an office in Leeds, Yorkshire. He worked for Leeds Corporation on various housing and tramway schemes and was active as an architect in Leeds until at least the late 1930s. He was a member of the Leeds and West Yorkshire Architectural Society and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1933. He died in Ripon, Yorkshire on 4 June 1961 and is buried in the graveyard of St Wilfrid's church in South Stainley, Yorkshire.
