Ernest Alfred Chilton was born in Clapham, Surrey [now London], England on 23 January 1890 and was articled to William Henry Overton (1879-1946) in Brighton, East Sussex, England for three years and then worked as an architectural assistant in Eastbourne, East Sussex for a further seven years.
He subsequently worked as an architect in Eastbourne and in Uckfield, East Sussex. He was Architect for Uckfield Urban Housing Scheme; Engineer to the Uckfield Water Co.; and Architect for East Grinstead Rural District Council Housing Scheme.
Chilton was a Member of the Society of Architects (MSA), and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1925 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1935. His address was given as High Street, Uckfield, East Sussex in 1901; Molesey House Grange Road Uckfield, East Sussex in 1911; 8, Ceylon Place, Eastbourne, East Sussex in 1914; Town Hall Chambers, Uckfield in 1923 and 1926; Loxfield Chambers, Uckfield, East Sussex in 1928 and 1939; and 3 Clinton Place, Seaford, East Sussex in 1939. He died in Uckfield, East Sussex on 14 March 1952
