Chippendale, Frank 1904 - 1988

Frank Chippindale was born in Otley, Yorkshire, England on 18 May 1904 and studied at Leeds School of Architecture where he was awarded a Dip.Arch. He then travelled to Japan and the United States on a scholarship. He worked for an architectural practice in Chicago before returning to England. He subsequently established his own architectural practice, Frank Chippindale & Associates which specialised in the design of schools, churches and housing. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1928.

Chippendale was head of Architecture and Town Planning at Leeds School of Architecture, head of architecture Manchester School of Art, and head of Architecture and Building at Leicester School of Art.  He undertook research for Nuffield College on Housing for Old People, and for the Leverhulme Trust on Furniture for the Working Class.  During the 1940s he designed furniture for the British Overseas Aircraft Corporation (B.O.A.C.). He retired to Winchester in Hampshire where he became actively involved in local conservation issues. He died in Winchester in June 1988
