Chisholm, David John 1884 - 1949

David John Chisholm was born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland in 1884 and was articled to John Moore Peddie (1853-1921) and George Washington Browne (1853-1939) of Peddie & Washington Browne in Edinburgh from 1901 to 1908. He also studied at Heriot-Watt College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh; School of Applied Art during these years.  He then worked as an assistant to Hippolyte Jean Blanc (1844-1917) in Edinburgh in 1910 before moving to London where he was employed as an assistant by James Glen Sivewright Gibson (1861-1951) in 1910-11; by London County Council Architects' Department Schools Division in 1912; by Charles James Blomfield (1862-1932) and Arthur Conran Blomfield (1863-1935) of Sir Arthur Blomfield & Sons in London from 1912.  He also attended the Royal Academy Schools in London and was awarded the RA Gold Medal and a £200 Travelling Scholarship in 1913. He qualified as an architect in 1912 and was elected an Associate of the Royal institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1913.

During World War One he served in the Army and was awarded the Military Medal in 1916 and the Military Cross in 1918. Following the war he briefly worked at the Department of Health in London before returning to Edinburgh in c.1920 to work in the office of J. M. Dick Peddie & Walker Todd.  In c.1927 he was made a partner in the practice. He was subsequently a partner in Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson from 1936 to c.1944 and Dick Peddie, McKay & Jamieson from 1944 to 1949. Chisholm died in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 27 July 1949.
