Clayton, Joshua 1890 - 1948

Joshua Clayton was born in Darlington, Durham, England on 22 May 1890 and was articled to Kitching & Lee in Middlesbrough.  He commenced practice in County Durham in c.1913. In the 1920s he was in partnership with William Arthur Kellett (1888-1950) as Kellett & Clayton. The practice were Housing Architects to Shildon and Saltburn Urban District Councils and numerous Rural District Councils.  By 1938 Kellett had left the practice and Clayton had formed a new partnership with Thomas Victor Deas (1901-1991) as Joshua Clayton & Deas.  Following the death of Clayton in 1948, Deas continued the practice until the 1960s.

Clayton was admitted a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1925 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1931.
He was also a member of the Northern Architectural Association and Vice-Chairman of the Teesside Branch.

His address was given as 50 Parkgate Darlington, Darlington, Durham in 1891 and 1911; 39, Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland; High Row Chambers, Darlington in 1923 and 1939 Market Place, Barnard Castle (all in Co. Durham) in 1923 and 1926; "Glenwood", Oak Dene Avenue, Darlington in 1926; and 184 Coniscliffe Road, Darlington, Durham in 1939. He died in Darlington in 1948.
