Clemence, Thomas Riley 1863 - 1947

Thomas Riley Clemence was born in South Shields, Durham, England on 15 December 1863 and was articled to Edward Augustus Gruning (1837-1908). He also attended University College London, the Royal Academy Schools Schools in London and the Architectural Association Schools in London.  He subsequently established his own practice in Guildford, Surrey. In the 1900s he was senior partner in the Guildford firm Clemence & Moon.

Clemence was a Member of the Society of Architects (MSA) and a Fellow of the Society of Architects (FSArc).  He was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1925. He was also a member of the Guildford and District Chapter of the South-Eastern Society of Architects and its Chairman.

Clemence was a fine watercolour painter, however, he appears not to have exhibited.

His address was given as 53, High Street, Guildford in 1914; and St. Mary's House, 59, Quarry Street, Guildford in 1923 and 1947. He died in Surrey on 4 April 1947.
