Couldrey, Walter Norman 1884 - 1970

Walter Norman Couldrey [also known as Major Walter Norman Couldrey] was born in Paignton, Devon, England on 7 August 1884 and was the son of the architect Walter George Couldrey (1856-1950). He studied at Bristol University and at the Architectural Association Schools in London and between 1908 to 1914 he assisted his father whose address he shared.

Walter Norman Couldrey subsequently established his own practice in Paignton where he remained for the rest of his career as an architect.

Couldrey was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1921 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1927.  His address was given as 19 Palace Avenue, Paignton, Devon in 1891 and 1939; and 28 St. Andrews Road, Paignton, Devon in 1970.  During World War One he served in the British  Army and rose to the rank of Major. He died in Paignton, Devon on 1 March 1970.  The office diaries of Walter George Couldrey for the years 1882-1916 are held at the British Architectural Library - Royal Institute of British Architects in London
