George Rackstrow Crickmay was born in itney, Oxfordshire, England on 26 December and trained as an architect under his father, George Hayter Crickmay (1808-1857) from 1846. From 1853 to 1855 he was clerk of works to James Piers St. Aubyn (1815-1895). He commenced independent practice in Weymouth, Dorset, England in 1858 and from 1881 was in partnership with his son, George Lay Crickmay (1855-1921) as Crickmay & Son.They opened an office in London in the 1890s. By 1894 a second son, Harry William Crickmay(1861–1937) had become a partner in the practice which was renamed Crickmay & Sons.
George Rackstrow Crickmay was Diocesan Surveyor to the Archdeaconry of Dorset and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1884. By 1901 he was living in Wandsworth, London. He died at 22 Keswick Road, East Putney, Surrey [now London] on 10 November 1907
