Crittall, Walter Francis 1887 - 1956

Walter Francis Crittall [commonly known as W.F. Crittall; also as Walter ‘Pink’ Crittall] was born the son of  the metal window manufacturer Francis Henry Crittall (1860-1935)  in Braintee, Essex, England on 2 July 1887. He studied at St. John's Wood Art School in London and subsequently worked as an architect, furniture designer and artist. He was also artistic and technical director of the family firm for which he designed a number of windows.

A china cabinet in veneered walnut, an octagonal table in mahogany, a child's bureau in mahogany, and two chairs in mahogany designed by Crittall are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' vol.23, 1929 (pp.132, 133).

As an architect he was both a follower and champion of the modern movement. He designed houses for himself and for employees of Crittall. Two photographs of the bedroom in the house Crittall designed for himself in Braintree, Essex, are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' vol.24, 1929 (p.70).

Crittall was an active member of the Design & Industries Association (DIA).  He died near Dunmow, Essex in 11 May 1956.
