Cullen, Alexander 1856 - 1911

Alexander Cullen [also known as Alex Cullen] was born in Craigneuk, Wishaw, Scotland, on 18 June 1856.  After serving an apprenticeship with James King, a builder in Motherwell, he studied at Glasgow University. By the 1880s he was practising as an architect in Motherwell and in 1898 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA).

Cullen was in partnership with James Lochhead (1870-1942) as Cullen & Lochhead from 1900, and with William Brown (1873-1953) as Cullen Lochhead & Brown from 1908 to 1911.

Photographs of 'Carnbooth', near Glasgow designed by Cullen are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1907 (pp.10, 106). Cullen died in Glasgow on 21 January 1911. Following his death Lochhead and Brown continued to run the practice with the title of the firm unchanged.
