de Maré, Eric Samuel 1910 - 2002

Eric Samuel de Maré [commonly known as Eric de Maré] was born the son of Swedish parents in Enfield, Middlesex, England on 10 September 1910, and studied at the Architectural Association in London from 1928 to 1933.  In 1934 he was elected can Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) and for the rest of the 1930s was employed by various architectural practices in London. He also lived and worked in Scandinavia.   

He was rejected for active military service on health grounds during World War Two, although he did work in camouflage.  From 1943 to 1946 he was editor of the Architects' Journal.  

de Maré long had an interest in photography and following the war he abandoned architecture as a profession in favour of architectural photography. He also wrote extensively on architecture, photography, politics and economics. He was the author of two significant books on architectural photography, both published by Penguin: Photography and Architecture (1961) and Architectural Photography (1975).

de Maré died in Painswick, Gloucestershire on 22 January 2002.
