Dougill, Wesley 1893 - 1943

Wesley Dougill was born in Aysgarth, Yorkshire, England on 6 March 1893.  In 1919 he entered the University of Liverpool School of Architecture where he was awarded a B.Arch. and Certificate in Civic Design in 1922, and an M.A. in 1924. He was also awarded the RIBA Measured Drawing Medal in 1923, the First Special Premium, British School at Rome in 1920, and the Godwin and Wimperis Bursary in 1935.  In 1919 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA).

He returned to the University of Liverpool to take up the dual posts of senior lecturer and research fellow. He was an active member of the Town Planning Institute and extensively researched town planning schemes both in Britain and abroad. He wrote about the English village and became the recognised authority on English coastal preservation and development.

He was co-editor of the Town Planning from 1926, and editor from 1935.  In 1940 he was appointed Chief Town Planning Assistant for the London 1940, and in the early 1940s was asked by John Henry Forshaw (1895-1973), Chief Architect and Planning Officer to the London County Council, to work with Patrick Abercrombie on the development of the London Plan.  Although he didn't live to see the publication of the Report, Dougill saw  through the preparation  of the completed Plan and then suddenly died.

Dougill's address was given as 1 Green Cliff Bradford in 1911; 42 Stirling Road, Edgbaston in 1925; 127 Chatham Street, Liverpool in 1933; and 5 Sandheys Terrace, Waterloo, Liverpool in 1939. He died in Worthing, Sussex on 14 February 1943.  His son, John Dougill (1934-2015) was an artist.
