William John Durnford [also known as W. J. Durnford] was born in Paddington, London, England on 31 January 1889. It is not known with whom he was articled. His occupation is given as Architect Assistant in the 1911 England and Wales Census. On 5 November 1913 he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in London, His studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War One in which he served in the Army. Following the war he embarked in a career as an architect and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1920. He subsequently practised as an architect in London and employed by the London County Council Architects' Department. By was the late 1940s he was Senior Architect, LCC, and had been elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA).
His address was given as 51 Chesterton, Road, North Kensington, London in 1911; 18b, Blomfield Road, Maida Vale, London in 1920 and 1926; "Rufus" 4 Litchfield Way, Hampstead Garden Suburb, London in 1930 and 1939; and Crossways, Munstead, Goldalming, Surrey in 1962. He died 9 November 1962
