Ernest Harcourt Edleston was born in Coppenhall, Cheshire, England in 1880 and was articled to Richard Bassnett Preston (1855-1934) and William Arthur Vaughan (1852-1915) of Preston & Vaughan in Manchester. He subsequently practised as an architect in Nantwich, Cheshire and by 1911 was in partnership with Thomas Bower (1838-1919) as Bower & Edleston. Bower had established a practice in the town in the 1850s*. Following Bower's death in 1919, Edleston continued the firm with the title unchanged for many years. The practice was subsequently renamed Bower Edleston Architects. It claims to be one of the longest standing architectural practices in the world [2021].
Edleston was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1906 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1939. His address was given as Bank Chambers, Nantwich, Cheshire in 1906 and 1939. He died in Nantwich, Cheshire on 3 February 1964
* Note: although all sources consulted give 1854 as the date when Bower established his practice, he could only have been aged about 16 at the time
