George Baines was born in Huntingdonshire, England [or Scotland - sources differ] in 1852 and was articled to Jonathan Tebbs Bottle (1832-1914) and Henry Olley (1854-1924) in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk from 1867 to 1870, He then worked as an assistant to William Gilbee Habershon (1818?-1891) and Alfred Robert Pite (1832-1911) in London for a year.
In 1871 [or 1874 - sources differ] Baines started his own practice in Accrington, Lancashire and was in partnership with Bottle as Bottle & Baines. The practice specialised in the design of Baptist churches. In 1884 Baines moved to London. In 1901 he took his son, Reginald Palmer Baines (1879-1962) into partnership and the practise became G. & R. P. Baines.
Baines was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1892. He retired as an architect in 1929 and died in Surrey on 17 March 1934.
