John Harold Gibbons was born in Crumpsall, Manchester, Lancashire, England on 10 September 1878 and was articled to Thomas Worthington (1826-1909) and Percy Scott Worthington (1864-1939) from 1895 to 1899. He then worked as an assistant to his father, John Gibbons (1850-1935) in 1901. He also attended Manchester School of Art. He qualified as an architect in 1902.
Gibbons commenced practice in Manchester in c.1902 and from 1906 was in partnership with his father. By 1909 the firm had offices in Manchester and London. The practice specialised in ecclesiastical architecture and designed numerous churches throughout England
John Harold Gibbons was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1902 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1919. He died in Hendon, Middlesex on 30 December 1957
