John Alfred Grew [also known as John A. Grew] was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England in c.1861. His occupation was given as Architect's Assistant in the 1881 in England and Wales Census. By the time of the 1891 Census he was practising as an architect and his address was given as Alexandra Road, Edgbaston, Kings Norton, Warwickshire. His address was given as 68, Blenheim Road, Kings Norton, Worcestershire in the 1901 Census. By the time of the 1911 he had moved with his wife, Hebe Mary Grew, to the Cannel Islands and his address was given as Salem House, St Lawrence, Jersey. He was still working as an architect in Jersey and was living in St. Lawrence in the early 1920s

Grew died in Jersey on 23 July 1926. His address at the time of his death was Felard Cottage, Mont Felard, St. Lawrence, Jersey
