Hall , Edwin Stanley 1881 - 1940

Edwin Stanley Hall was born in Dulwich, Surrey, England on 28 January 1881. He studied at Oxford University and the Architectural Association Schools in London, England, during which time he was articled to his father, Edwin Thomas Hall (1851-1923). He qualified as an architect in 1910. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1910 and Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1919.

During 1920s Hall was in partnership with his father as E. T. & E. Stanley Hall. The project for which they are best known is the Liberty & Co. department store in Regent Street, London, completed in 1924.

In c.1931 E. S. Hall merged his practice with Easton & Robertson, a practice established by John Murray Easton (1889-1975) and Howard Morley Robertson (1888-1979) in 1919. The merged practice became Stanley Hall, Easton & Robertson

In 1939-40 he served as President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (PRIBA).  He was awarded the RIBA London Architecture Bronze Medal in 1936; and the RIBA Bronze Medal for Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire in 1937. He was the representative in the UK of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He was also Hon. Treasurer of the Architectural Association and consulting Architect to the King Edward Sanatorium, Midhurst, Sussex, and the King Edward VII. Hospital, Cardiff.

Hall's address was given as Hillcote, Dulwich, London in 1911; 54 Bedford Square, London in 1911 and 1939.  He died in Marylebone, Middlesex [now London] on 16 June 1940.

Following his death the name Stanley Hall, Easton & Robertson was retained for a number of years. By c.1959 the title had changed to Easton & Robertson Cusdin Preston & Smith.

Alterations and additions to: — Gregynog Hall, Plas Dinam (both in Montgomeryshire), a Tudor mansion at Cefn Mably (Glam.), Kingston Manor (nr. Chippenham), and Perry Hill Cottage, Worplesden. Additions to Dulwich Picture Gallery; houses at Weybridge, Croydon, Woking, Dymchurch, and Warwick. War Memorial to the Queen's Royal Regiment at Trinity Church, Guildford.
