Hammond, Frederic 1847 - 1919

Frederic Hammond was born in Warley, near Brentwood, Essex, England on 7 January 1847. He  was articled to Edmund Woodthorpe (1812-1887) in London from 1861 to c.1866 and remained with him as his assistant. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1865 to c.1872 and in 1866 was awarded the ra silver medal for Perspective and Holography.

Hammond commenced practice as an architect in London in 1866, whilst continuing to work for Woodthorpe as his assistant and principal clerk. In 1884 they formed a partnership. Following the death of Woodthorpe in 1887, Hammond took up a number of appointments including Surveyor to Parish of St Giles Without, Cripplegate; Surveyor to Joint Gifts Estates of St. Giles, Cripplegate, and St. Luke's, Middlesex. Surveyor to Trustees of Lady Holles's Charity, and architect to Guardians of the City of London Union. In 1896 London County Council added a part of Hampstead, and In 1901 the Borough of Hampstead was formed Into one district, when he relinquished his private practice by arrangement with L.C.C. District Surveyor for the Borough of Hampstead.

Hammond was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1876, and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1890. He died on 6 June 1919. His death was registered in London

Extensive contracts for Chilworth Gunpowder Co., comprising erection of factories, magazines, coming houses, traverses, proof butts, tramways, engine and boiler houses, and chimney shafts, Ac.; vicarage houses, mission halls, and St. Andrews Church, Highgate: St. John's Gymnasium and Institute, Upper Holloway.
