Leonard Heywood was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England on 26 April 1893. Nothing is known about his training as an architect. In 1919 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) and moved to Manchester in 1929 to work at Manchester Town Hall as chief architectural assistant. In 1930 he was appointed Deputy Housing Director, and the following year Housing Director.
A low-cost house in Wythenshawe, Manchester, designed by Heywood is illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1934 (p.16).
He died in Ashton on Mersey, England, on 6 April 1938.
