Ernest James Wedlock Hider [also known as Ernest J. W. Hider] was born in Lee, Kent, England on 29 March 1870. He was articled to C.A. Richards from 1886 to 1890. He also attended the City of London College and South Kensington Schools. From 1891 to 1894 he worked as assistant to John Williams Stevens (1852-1939). In 1894 he commenced independent practice.
Hider was elected a Liceniate of the Royal Society of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1925.
He lectured at Goldsmiths College, New Cross, London.
His address was given as 14 Taunton Road, Lewisham, London in 1881 and 1891; 8 Clifford Inn. London and Redcoin, West Avenue, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex in 1911; 11 Avenue Chambers, Southampton Row, London in 1923 and 1926; 11a "Hillboro", The Mount, New Malen, Surrey in 1930; 11 Avenue Chambers, Southampton Row, London in 1930 and 1939; and 4 The Mount, New Malden, Surrey in 1939. He died in Surrey in March 1960
