Henry Higginson was born in Preston, Lancashire, England on 12 June 1862. He was articled to David Grant in Preston in 1877 and remained with him as his assistant until 1883. He also attended Preston School of Art. After working as an assistant to Joseph Hepworth in Carlisle from 1883 to 1886, he set up his own practice in Carlisle. In 1911 he was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA). He died in Carlisle on 5 September 1922.
