Higuer, Arnold André 1884 - 1937

Arnold André Higuer was born in Poland, Russian Empire [now Republic of Poland] in 1884. He moved to the USA as a child and subsequently became an American citizen. He trained as an architect as an architect at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris and was for a period in practice in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In c.1915 he moved to England and in 1916 exhibited at the London Salon. The catalogue gives his address as 5 Sherriff Road, West Hampstead, London. He appears to have returned to the USA because the following year he exhibited a painting at the Society of Independent Artists in New York City and address was given in the catalogue as 4 East 30th Street, New York City.  Records show that in September 1918 he also enlisted in the US army in Philadelphia.

During the inter-war years he was engaged on a garden city project in Brazil, the restoration of churches in Bucharest, and the planning of ‘Culture Parks’ in Moscow. By the early 1930s he had evidently returned to England, as he established a practice in London in 1933. In 1936-37 he designed a mansion block in Forest Hill, south London.

Higuer was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1933.

In addition to his work as an architect Higuer was a painter. A self-portrait by him is illustrated in Colour vol.3, no.3, October 1915 (p.114).  He died in Middlesex, England on 29 October 1937. His address at the time of his death was given as 12 Grey Close, Golders Green, Middlesex.
