Alfred Hill was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England in 1872. He was the son of Walter Hill (1833-1890), a builder and contractor in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, and trained as an architect at the Technical College in Huddersfield. He commenced independent practice as an architect in Huddersfield in 1906 and passed his professional exam in 1907. Later that year he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA). In addition to his work as an architect, Hill also lectured on building at Blackpool Municipal Technical College.
His address was given as 11 Thornton Lodge Road, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1907, and 28, Thornton Road, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1911 and 1914. He died in c.1939 and was buried in Lancashire on 17 March 1939
