Joseph Hill was born in 1888 and was articled to F.H. Holford in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1903 to 1907. He also attended Durham University from 1905 to 1908. He subsequently moved to the south of England and attended the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1911 to 1914.
He qualified as an architect in 1913 and commenced independent practice as an architect in London that year. During the 1920s he was Architect and Surveyor to Hodgson's Kingston Brewery Co., Ltd. and Supervising Architect to the Surbiton Housing Scheme.
He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1913 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1921.
His address was given as 5 Old Bond Street, London and 17 The Green, Richmond, Surrey in 1913; 115, Moorgate, London in 1923 and 1926; 34 Gordon Square, London in 1930 and 1935; and 124 Sloane Street, London in 1939. He died in 1947.
