Alexander David Hislop was born at Stonefield near Blantyre in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 2 March 1876 and was articled to William James Anderson (1863-1900) and Alexander Nisbet Paterson (1862-1947) in Glasgow. He also studied at Glasgow School of Art. He was awarded a prize for furniture design by Studio magazine in 1896, and a Silver Medal in the National Competition in 1897.
Hislop subsequently worked as an assistant to John Archibald Campbell (1859-1909) in Glasgow and was taken into partnership by him in 1908. Following the death of Campbell in 1909, Hislop took over the running of the practice. Much later in his career Hislop was also in partnership with Charles Gibson Welsh as Hislop & Welsh. In c.1960 Thomas (Tom) George Humphries (?-1998) also joined the practice as a partner in the practice which was renamed Hislop, Welsh & Humphries. Hislop continued to practice until the 1950s and died in Glasgow on 23 February 1966
