Frederick James Hobson was born in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, England, on 26 February 1871 and was the son of Samuel Hobson (1843-1916), a builder and contractor in Rawtenstall. He studied at the Schools of Art and Technology in Bury and Manchester and gained practical experience working in the building trade with his father. He set up his own independent architectural Practice in Rawtenstall in 1898. In 1910 he was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA). He died in Haslingden, Lancashire on 18 October 1949
