Alwyn Henry Holland was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in 1862*. He was articled to John Dodsley Webster (1840-1913) in Sheffield from 1878 to 1883 and remained with him as his assistant until 1909 when he set up his own independent practice in Sheffield. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911.
In addition to his work as an architect, Holland was also a painter. He was commissioned to paint views of the Large Banqueting Hall, Old Banqueting Hall and exterior of Cutlers' Hall, Sheffield, for the Collection of the Cutlers' Company; and his painting "View of Sheffield from above Midland Station" was purchased by the Corporation of Sheffield for Permanent Collection. He was Secretary of Sheffield Society of Artists. He appears not to have exhibited outside his area. He died in Patrington, Yorkshire in 1935
