Matthew Honan was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England on 27 January 1878. He was articled to George Enoch Grayson (1833?-1912) and Edward Augustus Lyle (1852-1909) of Grayson & Ould in Liverpool in 1895 and remained with them as an assistant. He also attended the School of Architecture, Liverpool University. He qualified as an architect in 1899 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) the following year. He commenced practice as an architect in Liverpool in 1903.
Honer's address was given as 31 James Street, Liverpool in 1900; 36 Dale Street, Liverpool in 1909 and 1914; Kilchreest, Clare, Ireland in 1911; and Grove Park. Liverpool. He was killed in action on the Somme, France on 14 November 1916 whilst serving as a captain in the South Lancashire Regiment during World War One.
