John Mansell Jenkinson was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in 1883 He was articled to William Henry Hemsoll (1846-1903) and Henry Leslie Paterson (1861-1926) of Hemsoll & Paterson in Sheffield from 1899 to 1903, and remained with the firm and its successor, Hemsoll & Chapman, as an assistant He also studied at Sheffield School of Art. Jenkinson qualified as an architect in 1909 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) later that year. He commenced practice as an architect in 1910 and was in partnership with Frank William Chapman (1869-1933).
Jenkinson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1934. He lectured on architecture at Sheffield University. His address was given as 35 Wostenholm Road, Sharrow, Sheffield in 1909; 18 Norfolk Row, Sheffield in 1909 and 1939; Sherwood, Kenwood Park Road, Sheffield in 1914; and 53 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield in 1965. He died in Sheffield on 29 August 1965
