Alfred Edwin Jones was born in Shorncliff, Kent, England, on 14 August 1894 and spent much of his childhood in Rawalpindi, India, where his father was serving in the Army. Following his father's retirement, he moved with his family to Dublin, Ireland. In c.1911 he was articled to the Dublin-based architectural practice Ashlin & Coleman. He subsequently established his own architectural practice in Dublin, and after a brief partnership with Aubrey Vincent O’Rourke, in 1919 he formed a partnership with Steven Kelly which continued until Kelly's death in 1951. He later formed a new partnership with his son, Felix Alfred Jones, and his elder daughter, Elisabeth Fleming.
Alfred Edwin Jones was elected a member of the Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI) in 1913 and was Vice-President in 1927-28, and President in 1930-31 of the AAI. He was also elected a member of the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI) in 1921, and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (FRIAI) in 1932. He died on 29 June 1973 and is buried in Dublin.
Jones compiled a biographical index of Irish architects and engineers. Following his death the index was subsequently deposited the Irish Architectural Archive and subsequently formed the basis of the Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720-1940.
