Jones commenced independent practice as an architect in London in 1843 and in partnership with Arthur Ebden Johnson (1821-1895). From 1882 to 1884 he was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (PRIBA). Jones was knighted for his services to architecture in 1886. He died at home at 30 Devonshire Place, London, on 21 May 1887.
