Frederick John Knowles was born in Manchester, England on 10 September 18589 and was the son of the architect John Knowles (1830-1879), a partner in the Manchester architectural firm Charles Clegg & John Knowles (Clegg & Knowles) with whom he probably trained. Following the death of his father in c.1884 he and Clegg's son, Charles Theodore Clegg (1861-1930) became partners in the practice which was renamed Clegg, Son & Knowles. Knowles resigned from the firm in 1885 and was declared bankrupt on 20 July 1889.
