William Gillespie Lamond was born in West Calder, Midlothian, Scotland on 4 December 1854 and trained as an architect in Dumfries and Northampton. Following the failure of his own practice in Arbroath, he worked in Dundee as an assistant to Charles Ower (1849-1921) and Leslie Ower (1851-1916) from 1896 to 1898; Thomas Martin Cappon (1863-1939) from c.1898 to 1904; and to James Hendry Langlands Senior (1861-1932) of the Dundee School Board from c.1904 to 1912.
Lamond died at Stirling Cottage, Friockheim on 23 June 1912. He was buried at Friockheim Cemetery in Friockheim, Angus, Scotland.
Architectural works by Lamond included a byre (cowshed), Westfield of Newholm, Lanarkshire (1883); Water Tower, Keptie Hill, Abroath (1885); St Vigeans Schoolhouse, Abroath (c.1890); and Fairweather's Turning Works, Friockheim, Angus (c.1893). Whilst working for C. & L. Ower, T. M. Cappon or Langlands: Pearl Insurance Building, beside the Royal Exchange, Dundee (c.1897); British Linen Bank, Dundee (1897); Whitehills Hospital, Forfar, Angus (1899); Wishart Memorial Church, Dundee (1899); Towers of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Forebank, Dundee (1900); Wishart Church, Dundee (1901); Roman Catholic Church, Broughty Ferry, Angus (1904); Ancrum Road School, Dundee (1905); 13 Lammerton Terrace, Dundee (1905); St Joseph's Roman Catholic Schools, Dundee (1905); Stobswell School, Dundee (1907); Façade of the Technical Institute, Dundee (1907); Dens Road School, Dundee (1907); Eastern School, Broughty Ferry, Angus (c.1907); and Glebelands School, Dundee (c.1908).
