Alexander Edward Matthew was born in London, England on 4 August 1903. Nothing is known about his training as an architect. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1934, That year he was made a partner iwith William Ernest Monro (1867-1945) n the London architectural practice Seth-Smith & Monro, subsequently known as Seth-Smith, Monro & Matthew.
His business address was 46 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London in 1934 and 1939; and 7 High Holborn, London in 1950. His home address was 6 Bolton Avenue, New Windsor, Berkshire, in 1939. He died on 17 November 1972. His address at the time of his death was 2 Bolton Crescent, Windsor, Berkshire
