Edward Brantwood Maufe [commonly known as Edward Maufe] was born Edward Brantwood Muff in Ilkley, Yorkshire, England, on 12 December 1883. [He changed his name by deed poll in 1909]. He was articled to the architect William Alfred Pite from 1898 to 1903 and the studied at St. John's College, Oxford University from 1904 to 1908. He also attended classes at the Architectural Association Schools in London. He qualified as an architect and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1910. He established an independent architectural practice in London in 1912.
Maufe was the author of 'Modern Church Architecture' (London: Incorporated Church Building Society, 1948) and 'The Pictorial History of Guildford Cathedral' (London: Pitkin Publications Ltd., 1968). He was Hon. Sec. of the Cities and Town Planning Exhibitions Committee (1910-14) and chief architect to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (1941-69).
Maufe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1920; an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1938; and a Royal Academician (RA) in 1947. He was knighted for his services to architecture in 1954. Maufe died in Uckfield, Sussex on 12 December 1974.
Architectural projects by Maufe included Kelling Hall, Norfolk, England (1912-14), the Church of Saint Bede and Institute for the Royal Association in Aid of the Deaf and Dumb in London (1922-23), Church of Saint Savior in Acton, London (1924), alterations to Shepherd's Hill (Maufe's own house) in Buxted, Sussex, England (1926), Far Scar in Grassington, Yorkshire (1928-29), Yaffle Hill in Broadstone, Dorset, England (1929), the Religious Studio for the British Broadcasting Corporation in London (1931), the Church of St. Thomas in Hanwell, London (1932), Guildford Cathedral (in Guildford, Surrey, England (1932-61), extensions to Heal & Sons department store in London (1936), the Playhouse Theatre in Oxford, England (1936), the Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Hook, Hampshire, England (1937-38), alterations and extensions to St John's College, Cambridge (1936-54), and the Royal Air Force Memorial at Runnymede in Surrey, England (1949-51). He also designed several branch banks for Lloyds.
