James McLachlan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1875. He was articled to Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) in Edinburgh from 1892 to 1897 and continued to work in Anderson's office as an assistant until 1904 when he set up his own practice in Edinburgh. He remained in practice in Edinburgh until at least 1950. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911.
