Paton, Archibald Gilchrist 1894 - 1964

Archibald Gilchrist Paton [also known as Archibald G. Paton; and as Archie Paton] was born on Ayr, Scotland on 8 October 1894*. From November 1908 to 1914 he was articled to John Keppie of Honeyman Keppie & Mackintosh in Glasgow, during which  time he also attended Glasgow School of Architecture. He then worked as an assistant to Honeyman & Keppie in Glasgow from 1914 to 1916; to Keppie & Henderson in Glasgow from 1916 to c.1930; and to George Arthur Boswell (1879-1952) in Dundee City Architect's Office from 1930 to c.1939.   Paton was appointed Deputy County Architect for Inverness-shire in 1946 and County Architect and Chief Planning Officer for Inverness-shire in 1957.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1921. In 1926 he joined the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) and was its Vice-President in 1929-30.

Paton won the Department of Health for Scotland premium of £75 for his designs for a rural four-apartment cottage in 1938.  During his time employed at Dundee City Architect's Office he mainly worked on the design of school buildings.

In addition to his work as an architect, Paton was also a graphic artist.  A pencil drawing by him entitled 'Cerne Abbas, Dorset'.

Between 1916 and 1963 he exhibited frequently at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. His work was also shown at the Royal Academy in London; Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He also exhibited etchings at the Dundee Art Society in 1936.

During World War One Paton served in the military fir three years.

Paton lived in Glasgow until the mid-1930s. In the mid-1940s he moved to Inverness. From the 1950s to c.1963 he lived at 15 Heathfield Drive in Milngavie, East Dumbartonshire.  He died on 14 October 1964.

* There is some uncertainty as to whether Paton was born in 1893 of 1894.  It was been suggested that his date of birth was wrongly recorded when he entered Glasgow School of Art as a student in 1910 [See Mackintosh Architecture, link below]
