Potter, John Alexander 1912 - 2000

John Alexander Potter [also known as Alick Potter] was born in Derby, Derbyshire, England on 22 August 1912 and studied at Sheffield School of Art and Sheffield University. He practised as an architect in Britain from the 1930s onwards. He was Head of School at the Hull School of Architecture [now Lincoln School of Architecture] and in 1957 was recruited as founder, Head of Department and Professor of Architecture at the University of Khartoum. He was later Professor of Architecture at Queen's University, Belfast for several years and in 1975 was made Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University.

During the 1940s and 1950s he collaborated with his wife, Margaret Potter (1916-1997), formerly Margaret Whittington, in writing and illustrating a number of educational books on architecture, some of which were published in the Penguin Puffin Picture Books series. The pair also collaborate in the design of their house, Gorsfach in Cardinganshire, Wales built between 1974 and 1992.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1934 and later a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA).

During World War Two he was a conscientious objector.

He died in 2000. His death was registered in Cardiganshire, Wales
