Pugh-Jones, David 1865 - 1939

David Pugh-Jones [also known as David Pugh Jones] was born in Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, Wales in 1865. He also attended technical classes at Cardiff University. He commenced independent practice as an architect in Pontypridd, Wales in 1894. In 1904 he was appointed Glamorgan County Architect, a position he held for many years.  He was a Member of the Society of Architects (MSA) and in 1925 was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA).  He died in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales on 26 January 1939

When In private practice, designed many business premises, chapels, churches, schools, residences, &c. As County Architect, more than sixty new elementary schools; four higher elementary schools at Caerphilly, Banrgoad, Garw, and Ogmore; laboratories at Penarth, Pontypridd, Aberdare, Bridgend, and other intermediate schools; responsible for works costing over £400,000 to the County Council alone, in connection with new schools, temporary buildings, remodelling old school since 1904. Previous to being appointed County Architect was responsible for the designs and erection of a large number of various buildings, such as business premises, chapels, churches, houses, schools, &e. One of three in final competition for the Rhondda Fever Hospital. Was for many years teacher and lecturer on various technical and art subjects; also coach for architectural and engineering examinations. Member of Council and Treasurer of the Astronomical Society of Wales. Member of the Cambrian and other Archaeological and Antiquarian Societies, &c. [Who's Who in Architecture 1914:]

Over 80 new schools in Glamorgan during the period 1904-25, the principal once being: — Secondary Schools at Caerphilly, Bargoed, Ogmore Vale, Pontycymmer, Mountain Ash; Elementary Schools at Caerphllly, Bridgend, Bargoed, Gilfach Goch, Llantrisant, Ogmore Vale, Whitchurch, Portcawl; extensions to Cowbridge Grammar School, and Intermediate Schools at Barry, Penarth, Aberdare, Pontypridd, and Bridgend. Plans have been prepared for new Elementary Schools at Tiryberth, Nantgarw, Dinas Isaf, Rhiwbina, Nantymoel, and Hengoed. Also a large number of extensions to various schools.
