Walter Vernet Quilter was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1874. He studied at Bristol University College and was articled to Sidney Gambier Parry (1859-1948). He worked as an assistant to Sir Arthur Blomfield (1829-1899), Charles James Blomfield (1862-1932) and Arthur Conran Blomfield (1863-1935) of Blomfield & Sons in London, and to Frederick Sandham Waller (1822-1905) and Frederick William Waller (1846-1933) of Waller & Sons in Gloucester.
Quilter commenced independent practice as an architect in Guernsey, The Channel Islands in 1904 and subsequently remained in Guernsey for rest of his career as an architect. He was a Member of the Society of Architects (MSA) and was admitted a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1925. He died in Guernsey on 25 April 1948. His address at the time of his death was Old Mill Bungalow, Rue Pondreuse, Saint Martins, Guernsey 1948.
